Aria Huffman - NNGF
This semester I am taking multiple interesting courses one of which being Environmental Ethics with Dr. Joe Balay. Within this course, we have a semester-long capstone project in which we partner with the Newport News Green Foundation to effectively utilize a property of green space. This project focuses on conservation, protection, and environmental justice. For this project, we surveyed the local communities regarding their preferences and understanding of our property and then used this data to create a proposal on how to best utilize this space with our focuses in mind. So, in the final stages of our project, we have decided that to best utilize the space we should add garden boxes with native plants to attract pollinators lining the property, a bike rack for commuters, and benches on the property so local individuals can enjoy the space. These additions connect to multiple topics we've discussed in our course Intro to Environmental Studies. For example, the garden boxes will attract pollinators and restore the environmental balance by removing invasives and reintroducing natives. Similarly, the boxes will act as a barrier to catch trash from the surrounding streets and patrons. The bike rack will help people easily utilize non-gas-powered vehicles as an alternative to typical forms of transformation. Lastly, the benches being placed in this natural area will improve individuals' mental and physical health as they will be able to participate in eco therapy or forest bathing in a micro sense.
