Aria Huffman - HRT
For my partnership with the Newport News Green Foundation on the activation of a local green space located off of Warwick Boulevard, I recently met with Amy Jordan from Hampton Roads Transit. Amy discussed the interesting projects that HRT has recently been developing such as new marketing strategies, rebranding, and a new ride-share option. These programs help to bring more attention to alternate forms of transportation like ride-sharing, van sharing, and buses. Similarly, HRT removes barriers that typically affect individuals in need to forms of transportation such as cost. They provide options for cheaper forms of transportation than alternatives. For example, their play on ride-sharing costs a fraction of the price (a couple of dollars) compared to competitors like Uber or Lyft. These options benefit the environment by decreasing fossil fuel emissions, noise, and physical pollutants. Similarly, HRT is attempting to reach a younger audience such as those in Generation Z. They use tactics such as 'romanticizing' public transportation on social media and playing into other prominent trends. This has expanded their reach extensively. Through creative and innovative thinking HRT is pushing forward into a new normal related to perspectives and utilization of public transportation.
