Sophia Dobbins American Camino in relation to Language and Nature

For our first assignment, our task was to describe the interconnectedness between language and the environment. There are many different ways that you could describe the relationship between language and nature but the way it was discussed in American Camino provided useful insight on the relationship. In the book specifically on page 18 Professor Redick discussed the interconnectedness of language and the environment and how language can shape our thoughts and emotions on the environment. Redick discusses how understanding language our bodies and the environment all play a role in meaning-making experiences on a spiritual long hike. I thought this was insightful because it can apply to even more than a long-distance spiritual hike but to everyday interactions with your environment. The language you use and its emotional connotation affect how you feel about the things around you. Even the preconceived connotations of certain environments may be seen as negative, if a different language is used when describing the same exact environment it may be seen in a more positive light without anything physical actually changing in the environment. Using American Camino's discussions about language and its relationship to the environment helped me craft my own paper about the interconnectedness of the two.
