Alexandria Griffith: Outside reading
I have been reading a book titled the pig that wants to be eaten. Within the book are 100 ethical dilemmas and then provides details and expands the questions as to why situations can be ok or not ok. The 5th dilemma that is written is titled the pig that wants to be eaten (same as the book title). The book goes on to say that there is a pig that has been engineered to be able to speak and has been engineered to want to be eaten. This thought that the pig wants to be eaten makes the man in the story, max, feel morally okay consuming the pig. In the story Max was originally a vegetarian and had been for 40 years but the pig that wants to be eaten made him take a moment and rethink his beliefs and moral views. If the pig wants to be eaten, why would one not consume the pig? After all we as a population consume pigs regularly. So if that specific pig wanted to be eaten, would it be wrong to not respect that animals wish? In the story Max decides it would be morally wrong not to respect the pigs wishes of being eaten. He states that it would be disrespectful to the pig not to eat her, considering thats what she wants. The book goes on to talk about why people typically go vegetarian. The first is that there is the issue of the conditions animals are kept in. The second is brought up is the act of killing itself. How could one end the life of a creature which could otherwise have a decent future? The ideas of vegetarianism is something that is commonly debated and brings forth many ideas both positive and negative.
