Audrey Hales - American Camino Chapter 5
Chapter 5, Wilderness as Sacred Space, explores the mythology of wilderness, religious practice, the Camino de Santiago, and the American pilgrimage. I remember reading this over the summer, and really resonating with the biblical examples Redick presents in this chapter. The Camino de Santiago, is a religious pilgrimage and a network of trails which all meet at the shrine of James the Apostle in Santiago, Spain. This is a trail I fully intend on walking with some of the other students from the Appalachian Trail class once I graduate. Its appeal lies in the encouragement of being immersed in the towns and cultures you pass through, and savoring the journey. Unlike the Appalachian Trail, it is not necessarily meant to be done as quickly as possible. After reading some of Kip’s experience on the Camino de Santiago, I am even more excited for that experience. In the remaining part of the chapter, Redick describes the intersection of time, the sublime, and liminal space through the words of other hikers.
