Sophia Cordovana- 22 of the newest invention that are making the world a more sustainable place-Outside reading- 4

I my high school oceanography class our end of year project was to make an invention that would solve an environment issue and I started researching the newest inventions made in resent years to help combat environment issues. The reason that I mention that is that I recently came across a video that talks about 22 invention that are saving the world. I definitely recommend taking the time to watch the 7 minute video, it gave very interesting examples and a couple that related directly to the field of study that I wish to go into! My favorite examples were the liter of light invention and the Baltimore trach wheel. The liter of light made it possible for poorer communities to assemble there own lighting souse made from old plastic bottles, which is both a good way to reuse plastic bottles and bring electricity to communities that might not have any. The Baltimore trach wheel was actually one of the invitations that I based my high school oceanography project on, an invention that focuses on removing trash from rivers (my project was ocean based). I enjoyed watching this video and researching the different conservation and sustainability inventions that are being developed because it makes me feel hopeful about the future.

Audrey Hales - American Camino Chapter 2

  Chapter 2 titled, “Spiritual Journey Versus Aesthetic Tourism” begins by discussing a hiker's experiences with Blood Mountain, many hikers being very thrown off by the intense discomfort. Dr. Redick describes this disillusionment well when he says “Their preconceptions did not prepare them for the journey. An aesthetic amble through the wilderness was never thought to be so uncomfortable, exhausting, emotionally draining, and lacking in visual stimulation”. I found this quote to be very amusing, because unless you have embarked on some version of long distance hiking you would not know the true meaning of it. To everyone that has never hiked on the Appalachian Trail, it is a scenic breath of fresh air on rolling mountains with mist and beautiful sunsets playing on rock outcroppings. Book review- The Call of the Wild

 I read The Call of the Wild by Jack London a few years ago and read it a second time a few months ago. It is one of my favorite books, not only because it involves the wilderness, dogs, and wolves but also because of the bond between Buck and John Thornton. At the beginning of the book, we learn that Buck is taken from his home in California and was sold as a sled dog in the Klondike Gold Rush. I remember the book being difficult to read at times due to the abuse that Buck and the other dogs faced, but it also opened my eyes to how important it is to respect every form of life, including a dog’s. While he was cared for and treated well in California, his master, Judge Miller, treated him more as a friend rather than a beloved companion, hence the lack of homesickness expressed by Buck. Even though Buck was a suburban dog, there was always something different about him, he was strong, brave, and fierce.
