Lindsey Johnson Blue Crab Research
A few weeks ago I decided that I wanted to do a research project with a professor because it would help me get needed experience since I will be applying to grad school soon. I talked to my major advisor and he recommended that I talk to Professor Carpenter. I set up a meeting and he agreed to start working on a environmental research project that would incorporate mathematical modeling since I am an Applied Math major and an Environmental Studies minor. During my own free time, I started researching previous environmental experiments and decided to do one on the blue crab population dynamics since it is a topic I have heard discussed in several of my classes. I know that the blue crabs are a huge part of commercial fishing in the Chesapeake Bay area and their population has been declining due to several different reasons. I want to learn more about these reasons and what can be done to slow down the decline since they are a huge part of the economy. The research project is still in its very early stages, but I am continuing to find and read previous research and experiments. I am excited to apply my mathematical skills that I have learned to a real life problem, especially an environmental one.
