Sophia Dobbins Article on Sustainability in Virginia Beach

 Sustainability is something that has always been important to me. It is Especially important to me in virginia beach because my mom job plays a big role in the sustainability efforts virginia beach makes to keep city building sustainable so when thinking about any outside research or reading i wanted to do from this class i was curious to see just what efforts virginia beach makes in regards to sustainability. I came across an article from Visit Virginia Beach that discusses just what the city does to be sustainable. The article begins by discussing Virginia Green, the state's sustainability program that Virginia Beach is an active participant in. In Virginia Beach there is an immense effort being made to make many popular tourist buildings and city buildings to be green certified. Meaning that the building uses the most efficient and waste reducing materials to what the buildings are made out of to make sure they are using the proper light bulbs to reduce the amount of energy the building is using. Virginia Beach also has several water conservation programs such as the Chesapeake Bay foundation and the Lynnhaven  River Now program that focuses on taking care of the many waterways Virginia Beach is surrounded by. It is cool to see the effort my own city is making to stay sustainable through this article.

Book review- The Call of the Wild

 I read The Call of the Wild by Jack London a few years ago and read it a second time a few months ago. It is one of my favorite books, not only because it involves the wilderness, dogs, and wolves but also because of the bond between Buck and John Thornton. At the beginning of the book, we learn that Buck is taken from his home in California and was sold as a sled dog in the Klondike Gold Rush. I remember the book being difficult to read at times due to the abuse that Buck and the other dogs faced, but it also opened my eyes to how important it is to respect every form of life, including a dog’s. While he was cared for and treated well in California, his master, Judge Miller, treated him more as a friend rather than a beloved companion, hence the lack of homesickness expressed by Buck.
