Sophia Dobbins Ecotherapy Assignement

For our second assignment this semester we were tasked with researching and annotating two articles one on the topic of ecotherapy and one on the topic of forestbathing. The article I chose for ecotherapy revolved around COVID-19 times and the citizens of Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket. The study used a sample population on both islands for both pre and post-pandemic research. The participants were asked several questions before and after the pandemic about their relationship with nature and the effects it has on their mental physical and spiritual health. Throughout the study, it was found that 95% of the participants said that nature had a positive effect on their mental health, 84% said it had a positive effect on their physical health, and 56% of participants said interacting with nature had a positive effect on the spiritual well being. Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket were chosen as locations because they had such large amounts of interaction with the environment with the low year-round population numbers and the large percentage of conservation land on the islands. In the conclusion portion of the study, it was recommended that clinicians recommend ecotherapy to people suffering negative mental effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a very interesting study to annotate being able to see the effects nature had on the participant's mental and physical health and how it could help others.
