Emily Sutherlin- 12/5/24 The Columbian Exchange

Though Christopher Columbus was horrible to the Native Americans, the Columbian exchange sounds positive; I like how some light shines in the darkness. I agree it is the most important event since the death of the dinosaurs, as it has changed life and is what two words (old and new) collided into one. It is amazing how the European vessels brought thousands of species to new homes all over the oceans.

Hannah Orloff - Suburban Landscaping

Growing up, my parents always told me that landscaping can be just as important to the value of a suburban home as the house itself. Having a shaven, green lawn bordered by small, symmetrical evergreens and splashes of color from annual flowers makes a property more uniform and enjoyable to look at from the road. Its attractiveness to the human eye allows those passing by to know that the owners are upholding the standards of a well kept home and conforming to the expectations of a suburban homeowner. Americans plant lawns with foreign grasses and maintain them to the societal definition of neat for the ascetics, but what about the practicality? How much water is wasted to keep the grasses green, how many living shrubs are ripped out because of their shape or size, how much gas is released from maintenance and mowing? The amount of time and money that goes into our lawns seems almost ridiculous when you step back for a second: the landscaping outside a house provides nothing to the own...

Morgan Pritchard- Research on DMC, An Eco-Friendly Chemical

I recently read an article on the research being done to investigate the sustainability of DMC. This article highlighted recent research on the application of dimethyl carbonate, its benefits, how it works, and what it can be used for by reviewing studies on DMC. DMC is a fuel additive and the article states that it is incredibly useful in enhancing sustainability because it addresses pollution issues head-on. It “holds excellent standing due to its sustainable synthesis (using CO2 as the building block), tunable reactivity, high biodegradability, and low toxicity”. Environmental companies are looking to use “environmentally benign strategies” (EBS) and green chemicals to address sustainability issues from their root and DMC seems to be a new option. This article went in depth about the DMC reaction and the studies done to test its sustainability, but I think research like this is a very important topic to discuss in classes like ours because it shows hard sciences, ...

Sophia Cordovana- 22 of the newest invention that are making the world a more sustainable place-Outside reading- 4

I my high school oceanography class our end of year project was to make an invention that would solve an environment issue and I started researching the newest inventions made in resent years to help combat environment issues. The reason that I mention that is that I recently came across a video that talks about 22 invention that are saving the world. I definitely recommend taking the time to watch the 7 minute video, it gave very interesting examples and a couple that related directly to the field of study that I wish to go into! My favorite examples were the liter of light invention and the Baltimore trach wheel. The liter of light made it possible for poorer communities to assemble there own lighting souse made from old plastic bottles, which is both a good way to reuse plastic bottles and bring electricity to communities that might not have any. The Baltimore trach wheel was actually one of the invitations that I based my high school oceanography project on, an invention that focus...
