Alexandria Griffith: American Camino CH 6
In chapter six of the American Camino the book talks about long distance hikers and short distance hikers. Both of these hikers may see and feel the same things, but are they really sharing the same experience? This is something I questioned a lot before I had went backpacking. Short distance hiking is a great option for backpackers who want to get out there and see the world, but only devote a few days to the trip. Long distance is great for backpackers who want to really fully emerge themselves in the backpacking trip. Short distance hiking can allow for breaks from a typical day-to-day life. This can lead the short distance backpacker to have a much different experince than a long distance backpacker. The long distance backpacker is also devoting a long duration of time to backpacking and this helps to create a detox from the typical world. When backpackers take themseleves away from the typical world that we live in and enter into a backpacking experience (whether short or long) there will be positive effects. I believe that both long and short distance backpackers can see and feel the same locations, but i do not think they can share the same experience. This is because one individual has devoted much longer to the trip than the other, which does not make one better than the other. I just believe that that is such a big difference that the two must have different experiences.
