Alexandria Griffith: Montenegro

My freshman year of highschool I moved overseas to Montenegro for a few months. I had never been out of the country so the whole experience was new to me. I quickly realized once I was there the environmental differences. I lived in two areas while in Montenegro. I stayed in a house on the bay in Kotor for a few weeks, and then I lived in an apartment in Podgorica. Kotor and Podgorica are very different than American in a number of ways. First, it was much more common to eat outside than inside. At most the places we ate at while at the bay were all outdoor seating (i cant remember any that were indoor setting by the bay). The only indoor area was for the kitchen and cooks. Outdoor animals were also much more common. When you sat down to eat in Kotor when the waiters brought you your water they would also bring you a spray bottle with water. The spray bottle was for if any cats tried to come to your food, you could spray them to get them to go away. I thought this was very interesting especially considering that is not something I have ever experinced in America. Another thing was that Montenegro seemed much more environmentally aware than America did. While I was in Podgorica and Kotor I noticed lots of easy changes than could help america. For one, while at resturants they always gave out cloth napkins. This helps to cut down on all the waste of paper napkins and towels. In some resturants there were areas marked where you could get more cloth napkins, or you could ask for more. Once leaving some resturants had specific bins that you would put ur napkins in, some just collected them once you left. I thought this was really interesting and smart. It is such a small change but it can really help in the long run. I talked to one of the resturant owners and she explained to me how it has helped them save a lot of money, and help the environment by reducing waste. The resturant owner also brought up how theres been a reduce in littering. She explained to me that when the resturant originally used paper napkins and towels when the wind came it would take all of the paper products. She explained why that was the orignally reason that they switched from paper to cloth products. I found this all to be very eye opening and im curious to know how such a thing like this would work in America.
