Aria Huffman - Chapter One TAC

This chapter discussed environment, space, and place along with other topics. Our enjoyment of life and the environment is dependent on our perspectives and how we approach life through language. Language alters the protagonist's perceptions of space and once he experiences it for himself. He is able to form his own beliefs and use language to convey his perspectives effectively. In this chapter, "the heavens" are described as lush and full of life. Space, throughout the reading, is viewed as a beautiful creator rather than a dark void of space. Space is even described as "the womb from which the world comes into being". Through this definition, language is used to paint a picture in the reader's mind. The protagonist originally had a view of 'Space' as being a void. He states, "The very name 'Space' seemed a blasphemous libel". This is because space, in his opinion, is truly the womb of the world. It is beautiful, lush, and full of natural beauty. He feels as if his beliefs were swayed due to language and when he is able to experience it himself he is able to form his own perspectives on space itself.
