Audrey Hales - Chapter 4
Chapter 4, “Can Wildness be found on a Wilderness Trail”, dives into many philosophical aspects of wildness, nature, and our relationship with it. Nature does not care or accommodate our perceptions of it. Any preconceived notions or expectations we project onto the “other”, is irrelevant to it. It all continues to exist harmoniously regardless of our thoughts or opinions. Redick explores even more this idea of liminal space, and if wilderness is considered liminal space. If nature is where we came from, how can it not be the beginning, middle, and end of our journey, why is it considered the “in between”? Redick also discusses the rule of “leave no trace” when enjoying the outdoors. This is a universal rule among hikers to respect the land you are passing through and to leave it looking like you were never there. In addition to that, if you see trash on the trail or in the shelters, pick it up and make the space better than you found it.
