Audrey Hales - The Surfrider Foundation

The Surfrider Foundation is a national organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, beaches, and coastlines. Although there are many wonderful environmental clubs and groups on campus, last year I felt that CNU would benefit from a club that solely focused on the waterways around us. As someone who has always been extremely passionate about the ocean, I felt very driven and enthusiastic about this club. I had no idea how much work it would be when I started it, but the challenge forced me to grow professionally and personally. I am not a natural leader, but my dedication to the cause allowed me to keep going. Upon starting the Surfrider Club at CNU, I was met with lots of enthusiasm from other students and we grew very quickly. Our first event was a beach clean up at Huntington Beach, and we had an amazing turnout of around 40 volunteers! Since then, our club has led many more beach clean ups, beach yoga, elementary education days, informational booths, and even shell painting! Our shared interest and goal of environmental protection has allowed our club to thrive, and hopefully it will continue to grow as the years go on.
