Audrey - Norfolk Naval Shipyard

I wanted to learn more about local Newport News and Hampton Roads environmental pressures, and I found the most ironic article about the Norfolk Naval Shipyard being an environmental steward. The title of the article takes up half the page and shouts ”Naval Shipyard Supports Environmental Stewardship: Clean the Bay, Our Way”. The article then goes on to discuss the one day of the year (Clean The Bay Day) where the shipyard encourages its employees to pick up litter in the area. The event is led by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to address the pollution and water quality concerns in the Bay. It is so ironic because big industry such as the shipyards greatly contributes to these concerns due to pollutants such as; leakages of toxic chemicals and other substances (oil), atmospheric emissions, noise pollution, wastewater, thermal pollution. Upon further research on the EPA’s website, the Norfolk Naval Shipyard has been declared a superfund site due to the large amount of toxic chemicals in the soil. If those chemicals are present in the soil, then they are definitely entering the waterways adjacent to the shipyard. Unfortunately, so many large industries put on the face of being environmentally friendly just to get away with continuing to pollute.
