Caitlin McClafferty- American Camino & Aesthetic Tourism

In chapter 2 of American Camino Walking as Spiritual Practice on the Appalachian Trail Kip Redick talks about aesthetic tourism and how humans view nature. Many people like the idea of nature being tamed instead of nature being wild.

People recreate nature to make it aesthetic instead of viewing its beauty for what it is. On page 47 Kip Redick says “that kind of beauty which would look well in a picture” is a good quote from chapter 2 that I think is very important.

I think humans morph nature to what they think is athletic and don't enjoy it in its natural form. A lot of people are scared of the wilderness which is why they try to change it to their desires. This is very normalized. For instance we tear up nature to make grass lawns and tear up plants to garden new ones we think are prettier.
