Caitlin McClafferty- Be Less Trashy Reading

Be Less Trashy is a book I read a couple years ago that I recently decided to read again. The author is Tara McKenna. She talks about how she used to struggle with a shopping addiction and did not have sustainable habits. One day at the peak of her overconsumption was when she had a turning point.

When she was in her 20’s, she traveled around the world and the countries she visited were not what she had imagined they would be. She stated that some of the countries she went to that are shown to be so clean and beautiful had become wastelands. Trash sent from other countries or richer areas had been dumped in once beautiful areas. She said it made her so sad and opened her eyes to all of the trash humans produce, and how the system really works. She had not seen something like this before because the US sends trash to other countries as a short-term solution instead of finding solutions to produce less waste.

After this, she decided to change her lifestyle habits and throughout the books talks about minimalism and using less, along with trying to help others who struggle with a shopping addiction. She talks about how minimalism doesn’t only help the environment by producing less but also helps people’s mental health as clearing physical clutter helps clear mental clutter.
