Caitlin McClafferty- Consumer Detox Book

Consumer Detox is a book written by Mark Powley that I read earlier this year. The book talks about how as time goes on we are given more and more things to consume as we develop as a society. We are always hearing new information, buying new things, yearning for more experience…etc. Because of this we are always wanting more and can lead to never feeling fulfilled. This can lead to low self esteem and poor mental health.

I think the author perfectly describes technology as a driver of overconsumption. Because of technology, we constantly have consumption at our fingertips whether it is information, online shopping or constantly being in contact with people who are not around us. Even though this can be really helpful and beneficial, it also never lets us be fully present with where we are unless we take a step back and realize this. This book was a good reminder for me that overconsumption makes life more stressful and I think the message the author is getting across is very important.
