Caitlin McClafferty- Recycling Is Not The Answer

The recycling system is not the answer to our plastic waste problem. Recycling can be a way to reuse the plastic and glass that was already made, but how much does it really help? There are many problems with using recycling as our answer. In the United States alone, only 5% of plastics actually get properly recycled. Each area has different rules when it comes to this process which makes it harder for people to know what can properly get recycled and what cannot be put in the bin. When there is a mistake and something is put in the bin that shouldn't be, the whole bunch gets thrown in the landfill as they do not have time to go through every bag and pick out all of the wrongfully placed objects.

Even when objects are rightfully placed, the labor and materials used to recycle materials adds more pollution than there already was. There is also the issue of more products still being made, and we can only recycle things so many times to try and balance out the production of newly made products. Once glass or plastic has been recycled and made into something new, the average amount of times they can be “reproduced” is only two times. So once those two times are finished, they go to the landfill which does not solve the problem and materials going to the landfill, it just prolongs the process until they get there.
