Caitlin McClafferty- Sustainable Homes

In class we had speakers talk about how they built sustainable homes in Poquoson. I found it so interesting because I did not know we had atrium garden houses in this area, or much knowledge of them in general. I really appreciated when they described what sustainability means to them, and how it really means to not take things from the earth that you are not able to give back. They gave details on how the heating, water, and building works along with certain plants they used to help clean the air. Something I did not even think about was off gasses from paint and other furniture, and how all of those little details are so important to create a healthy space along with one that is good for the planet.

I think more people aren't taking the steps in their lives to be more sustainable because they think it is too hard, and not convenient. I understand where they are coming from but I also think that the issue is more important than convenience. Ways that have helped me is to be creative and to talk with other people who are trying to be more sustainable too. Little steps go a long way and when you keep adding more and more sustainable habits, it gets a lot easier. I also found that it is actually less expensive in the long run as the items I buy are longer lasting and better quality.
