Charlotte Fowler- Planetary Boundaries (outside reading)
In 2015, scientists introduced the concept of planetary boundaries, a framework designed to identify the Earth's critical limits and ensure humanity operates within a "safe zone" to maintain the planet's stability. The framework highlights nine interconnected systems essential for regulating Earth's resilience, such as climate stability, biodiversity, freshwater resources, and nutrient cycles. Crossing these boundaries increases the risk of triggering irreversible changes, like biodiversity collapse, climate feedback loops, or ecosystem degradation. Alarmingly, research shows that humanity has already exceeded four boundaries—climate change, biodiversity loss, land-system change, and nitrogen and phosphorus cycles—pushing the planet toward a less stable and less hospitable state. These boundaries emphasize the need for a balanced approach to human development, ensuring that economic and social progress doesn’t come at the expense of Earth's long-term health. By respecting these limits, the framework provides a roadmap for creating a sustainable future in harmony with the natural world.
