Charlotte Fowler- Amazon's Water
By learning about the Water Wars going on in the world, I began to wonder more about this finite resource that I thought to be infinite. I read an article about the Amazon Rainforest where a National Geographic Explorer highlighted the critical role water plays in maintaining the health and biodiversity of the rainforest’s ecosystem. The article also discussed the severe impacts human activities, like deforestation and climate change, have had on the Amazon, threatening its balance and global significance.
The rainforest’s life is dependent on the water cycle and water exchange and has a very specific pattern it must maintain in order to thrive.
It was fascinating to learn about how the Amazon’s water impacts places far away. The Nat Geo explorer pointed out that moisture from the forest actually influences weather patterns in other parts of the world. It’s incredible to think about how something as simple as water vapor can connect a rainforest in South America to rain in other continents.
However, deforestation and climate change are throwing off the balance of this delicate system. If we lose too many trees, the water cycle could break down. That would not only harm the Amazon but could ripple across the globe, affecting agriculture, weather, and people everywhere.
Reading this article made me appreciate how interconnected everything is. It’s easy to think of the Amazon as just a distant, exotic forest, but it’s actually a key player in keeping the world livable. Being that our Earth is made up of mostly water.. if we want to protect the planet, we need to protect the water.
This has made me more aware of my own role in this global system. Maybe I can’t save the rainforest on my own, but I can support organizations that do and educate others about its importance.
