Emma Joyner- Ecotherapy

In an article that discusses ecotherapy, titled, “Ecotherapy: Tribalism in the Mountains and Forest”, graduate psychology students at a university took a class trip to go hiking in the Appalachian Mountains. On their trip, they went to a Native American reservation where they spoke with and learned about some of the traditional practices of the Natives in the area. The researchers don’t discount modern therapy and they actually think it’s very useful. However, they argue that the integration of ecotherapy into our modern-day therapy is incredibly beneficial for patients because it fosters that deep sense of interconnectedness to the environment that is lacking in traditional therapeutical practices. Researchers Davis and Atkins argue that the environment plays a particularly important role wherein ecotherapy practiced in the elements such as the mountains or a forest, can help heal. This healing takes place when individuals are able to engage with their environment which leads to emotional healing, personal growth, and a stronger sense of belonging. From their research, Davis and Atkins hope to inspire a new wave of counseling programs and therapists that utilize ecotherapy in their healing efforts. I think the incorporation of ecotherapy into traditional therapy is a brilliant idea. If nothing else, I think that mode of therapy can be really attractive and draw people in to want to help themselves.
