Emmy Bassarab - Desalination

A Review of Limitations and Potential of Desalination as a Sustainable Source of Water

I found this paper online talking about whether or not desalination is a potential source of water. I found this for the term paper due at the end of the semester. The gist of this paper is that while desalination could potentially be a solution for the water crisis, it could also cause a myriad of problems. The potential environmental impacts include the endangerment of marine life, waste runoff from plants, and releasing greenhouse gases. If desalination is used as the main way to extract water, the climate issue will become worse. This is because the global climate change that we are all so used to hearing about is also interconnected with the water of the earth.  Water helps to keep the earth cool. It grows plants which produce oxygen into the atmosphere, which then grow and produce shade. Desalination could make the whole climate issue worse, which is why I believe that desalinations shouldn’t be the main solution to the water crisis.
