Emmy Bassarab - Flint, Michigan

I recently read this study on the Flint, Michigan water crisis. In early 2014, Flint, Michigan changed their water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The water from Lake Huron was treated and had very low levels of lead. The water from the Flint River had extremely high levels of lead and even chlorine. The water was even a dark brown color and had an odor to it. The researchers from this study wanted to test the levels of lead in children under the age of five before and after the water crisis. They found that before the change, more children had an elevated level of lead in their system. After watching the documentary on water, I got inspired to write about what happened in flint. For years people were unable to get clean drinking water and had to spend extra money in order to get water. Plus, the effects of the increased levels of led are being seen in children. In my opinion, everyone should have access to clean drinking water because it is essential to survival. Luckily, the people of Flint now have clean water and have switched back to sourcing it from Lake Huron.
