Emmy Bassarab - Forest Bathing

The tree-species-specific effect of forest bathing on perceived anxiety alleviation of young-adults in urban forests

For my annotated bibliography, my second academic source found that different tree species can actually have an effect on reducing anxiety in young college students. Compared to the first academic paper I found; this paper was an actual study. I thought it was interesting that researchers were not just testing if forest bathing had an effect, but also if specific tree species had any effect on reducing anxiety. It makes me think about how since I’ve been going to CNU, whenever I am overwhelmed with my studies, I go to this specific tree on campus and sit in it. I have probably sat in it over 30 times since being here. I noticed that I feel better, mentally, after being in it, like I’m less anxious about all the work I have to do. Could it be that some subconscious part of myself recognized that being out in nature is beneficial to my mental well-being?  I’m not sure about that. It honestly could be that I just like the tree. What’s really interesting, is that the study found that the tree species that reduces the most anxiety are oaks and the tree that I sit in is an oak tree.
