John Delamar - Sustainable Housing 12/6 - In Class Entry

Sustainable housing and sustainable housing practices are a very useful and practical application of the knowledge gained in this class. I’m glad that the developers of the sustainable community in Poquoson came down to tell the class about their community and how they went about building it and what methods of sustainability they used. Through their talk I learned a lot about off-gassing which is common in a lot of homes but not their homes. They also talked about a variety of different plant species which are beneficial to keep in your home if you have bad allergies. Their homes are built to be cool in the summer and keep warm in the winter without using any heating or air conditioning. Other sustainable home practices I’ve come across include diversifying your lawn. Incorporating more flora in your lawn you are promoting healthier soil and a healthier environment all around. My parents recently built a home and next to the house they have something called a bio pond. This pond acts as a natural filter for runoff water from the roof of the house. It made me happy to see my parents were doing something to combat pollution given we had just built a new house.
