Lyla Bouchard - American Camino Chapter 6

Chapter 6 discusses the differences between day hikers and long-term hikers. Day hikers do not face the same mental and physical challenges that long-term hikers do. Unlike long-term hikers, day hikers can choose the weather conditions they want to hike in, whereas long-term hikers must continue their trek regardless of what nature throws at them. Day hikers also do not have to carry heavy backpacks full of gear and are not accustomed to the strain that long-term hikers experience. Additionally, day hikers likely don’t know what it’s like to walk for miles on end for days. As mentioned in this chapter, day hikers typically have a much clearer end goal than long-term hikers, who often have a more open-ended journey.

Personally, I think day hikers still experience a connection with nature and a sense of spiritual feelings while hiking, but the intensity of these feelings might not be as deep as long-term hikers. Although long-term hiking seems more intense, especially on a spiritual level, I think day hiking would be more suited for me.
