Lyla Bouchard - Outside reading: What is bycatch? Why is it a problem?

Bycatch is when marine animals are unintentionally caught during commercial fishing. Unfortunately, it results in damage to marine ecosystems, extinction of vulnerable species, and habitat destruction. Fishing techniques designed to target specific species often lead to injuries or death. The most heartbreaking aspect of bycatch is the immense suffering these species go through. Trapped in fishing gear, they experience distress, injuries, and a high chance of death. Even if they are thrown back into the ocean, their chances of survival are slim. Bycatch needs to be changed so we can protect our oceans and preserve marine biodiversity.
