Lyla Bouchard - Outsude Reading: The overlooked benefits of real Christmas trees
Today, my family and I got our Christmas tree, and I started wondering how harmful cutting down this many trees could be on the environment each year. After reading an article by Jocelyn Timperley called “The overlooked benefits of real Christmas trees,” I learned that cutting down Christmas trees actually has positive environmental effects and is much better than buying a fake one. Christmas trees are typically grown in a farm specifically for the purpose of being cut down. These farms not only create habitats for wildlife, but also capture carbon helping mitigate climate change. Real trees are also able to be recycled after the holidays and used for compost, erosion control, and more. Before reading this article, I was unsure if my family should be getting a fake Christmas tree to avoid cutting down a real one. But there are many benefits of choosing a real tree as fake trees contribute to environmental issues both in the production of them and when they are disposed.
