Lyla Bouchard - Veganism

In class, we discussed why being a vegan isn’t necessarily better than eating meat. Being a vegan is often promoted as being better for the planet and more environmentally friendly, but in reality, it’s not always the case. When it comes to environmental impact, plant-based foods can generate just as much of a carbon footprint as animal agriculture. If someone is vegan for ethical reasons, farming practices can be unethical for both plants and animals. While I do think people who choose to be vegan for these reasons have good intentions, it’s more complex than they realize. Meat production can be unharmful when done on a smaller scale level or using sustainable practices. Instead of choosing to be vegan or cutting out certain foods, I think people should make informed decisions based on how and where their food is produced.
