Lyla Bouchard - Outside reading: The World's Plastic Pollution Crisis Explained

Plastic pollution has become an alarming environmental crisis, affecting our beaches, oceans, and wildlife. A lot of our plastic usage, like water bottles and plastic bags, is only used for a few minutes but takes hundreds of years to decompose. During decomposition, plastic becomes microplastic, which disrupts ecosystems and is eaten by wildlife. These microplastics are being found everywhere, including the food we eat. Once plastic enters the environment, it’s impossible to remove and is detrimental on wildlife.

Plastic pollution is a very serious issue, and I don’t think it’s receiving enough attention. Most of our plastic waste comes from single-use items and tends to end up in our oceans. We need to find an alternative, especially for these items that are immediately thrown away or littered. There needs to be stronger regulations and bans to reduce plastic use and a transition to a better alternative.
