Morgen Wood - American Camino Chapter 2
As I reflect on the extensive preparation and dedication required to hike the Appalachian Trail, it becomes clear that in todays society, actually hiking the full trail is increasingly impossible for many. Modern life, with its relentless pace and demands, creates significant barriers. In todays society, work and finical responsibilities dominate the majority of peoples time. Much of humanity are tied to their jobs that demand long hours and often leave little space for personal goals and hobbies. The reality of needing to work for most of ones life, sometimes well into old age, means that the luxury of taking months off to hike the Appalachian Trail feels more like an unattained fantasy than a real possibility. While it is easy to dream of leaving being the hustle and bustle of daily life, the structure of modern society--focused on constant productivity--rarely allows for such an escape. Even for those who eventually reach retirement age, there's the unfortunate reality that the physical toll of ageing can limit the ability to take on such a challenge. By the time many people finally have the time to pursue personal goals, their bodies may no longer be equipped for the physical demands of hiking for months in rugged terrain. This disconnect between the dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail and the reality of modern life emphasizes a larger issue in todays society: the constant divide between personal fulfillment and societal expectations. The structure of work and daily responsibilities often comes at the cost of the time and health needed to pursue personal passions.
